As a freelance designer, there are many ways to make money and build a successful business. All three of us (Vivid co-founders) have worked as freelancers at one time or another. We learned through both research and trial and error, and found success doing it. Here are some tips to help you get started:
- Build a strong portfolio: Your portfolio is a key part of attracting new clients and landing gigs. Make sure to include a diverse range of projects that showcase your unique skills and style. For reference, here are our personal portfolios: Ryan, Alex, Kyle.
- Network and market yourself: Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and use social media and other online platforms to promote your work and connect with potential clients. Our favorite platforms are Instagram and LinkedIn, but designers also commonly use Behance and Dribbble too.
- Set your rates and negotiate contracts: Determine your hourly rate or project fee based on your skills, experience, and the local market. Be confident in your pricing and be prepared to negotiate with clients to ensure that you are fairly compensated for your work. Never work for free!
- Stay organized and manage your time effectively: Freelancing requires good time management skills to ensure that you meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work. Use project management tools to keep track of your tasks and stay on top of your workload. Set a schedule and stick to it.
- Expand your skills and knowledge: Continuing education and staying up-to-date on the latest trends and techniques can help you stand out in the competitive world of freelance graphic design. Consider taking online courses or attending workshops to learn new skills and stay current in your field. Right now, our favorite design program to use is figma.
